Leaking Water – The Real Threat To Your Home

"IT WAS GREAT THAT OUR HOME SECURITY SYSTEM ARMED EVERY WINDOW, DOOR AND POSSIBLE ENTRY POINT, HOWEVER, ON THAT DAY THE THIEF WAS ON THE INSIDE."

On Sunday, July 30th, 2017, my husband and I decided to run a short errand together. We knew we wouldn’t be gone long but, as usual, we pulled out our cell phones and armed the house to be sure our home was safe and secure. We pulled back in half an hour later (disabled the alarm system) and when we walked into our kitchen we heard a sound that was all too familiar……the sound of a THIEF - running water. And I mean RUNNING water.

We heard a sound that was all too familiar……the sound of a THIEF - running water.

A pipe below the sink in the half bath off the kitchen had become dislodged, and there was already 2-3 inches of HOT water that had filled the room. It was following its typical path across and down the hall, into the heat register, through a storage closet below us and on its way through the playroom to the laundry room – the closest drain. Instantly, a sinking feeling set in and we ran in opposite directions…..me to get towels, blankets, anything that could soak up water (and melted candle wax) and my husband wading through the lake in the basement to shut off the water valve. Now, a reno was a good idea in this area but not in this way. Here’s the quick list:

  • NEW floor in the bathroom

  • NEW floors in the hallway (plus those that connect - gotta match you know)

  • NEW bathroom vanity,

  • NEW baseboards

  • NEW drywall, etc.

There was nothing new for us though. We had been here before and we knew it would be months of work lists and expenses before we’d arrive on the other side. It was great that our home security system armed every window, door and possible entry point, however, on that day the THIEF was on the Inside.

Guardian personally thanks the home owner, Jane Young, for sharing her water damage story. It is a great reminder that we should always be prepared from all threats to our home – not just the ones that may lurk outside.

With over 14,000 water damage claims filed in the U.S. every day and 98% of U.S. homes experiencing water damage during the lifetime of the home, it is only a matter of time before every homeowner is affected. Other scary numbers – the average water damage repair costs between $5,000 and $8,000 after the deductible is paid! Yikes!
